About The Lucky Baldwin Neighborhood

Baldwin Hills is named for Lucky Baldwin, a legendary 19^th century land development pioneer and horse racing enthusiast, a.k.a. Elias “Lucky” Baldwin.  Baldwin Hills has the unique distinction of being the site of the very first Olympic Village, which was built for the 1932 L.A. Summer Olympic Games. 

The village was built for male athletes only and consisted of several hundred buildings, including a hospital, an amphitheater, a post office, a telegraph office, a bank and a fire department.  Female athletes numbered fewer than their male counterparts and were provided lodging at Chapman Park Hotel located on Wilshire Boulevard.  Once the Summer Games were over, the village was demolished.

-          Baldwin Hills Estates.The street names in the Baldwin Hills Estates area have sometimes earned it the name “the Dons” – with street names like Don Felipe and Don Luis.  Most homes in this area offer panoramic views of downtown Los Angles and the San Gabriel Mountains, and are modern homes with swimming pools and many amenities. 

-          Baldwin Vista.  This community is located to the west of the major thoroughfare and features smaller homes with a more secluded and private atmosphere. 

-          Village Green, which was once named Baldwin Hills Village, is a multi family residential community that has become a historic mid-century garden city.  Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2001, Village Green is also home to condominiums and spacious grounds, and tends to attract young families and seniors.
