About The Lucky Baldwin Neighborhood
Baldwin Hills is named for Lucky Baldwin, a legendary 19th century land development pioneer and horse racing enthusiast, a.k.a. Elias “Lucky” Baldwin. Baldwin Hills has the unique distinction of being the site of the very first Olympic Village, which was built for the 1932 L.A. Summer Olympic Games.
The village was built for male athletes only and consisted of several hundred buildings, including a hospital, an amphitheater, a post office, a telegraph office, a bank and a fire department. Female athletes numbered fewer than their male counterparts and were provided lodging at Chapman Park Hotel located on Wilshire Boulevard. Once the Summer Games were over, the village was demolished.
